We had a new experience yesterday at a graduation pool party.

I followed my adult autistic son out to the pool. Surprisingly, he passed by the gorgeous candy bar and the smorgasbord of food spread out for the festivities after congratulating his cousin.

We got to the pool and he said, "LEAVE ME ALONE."

I left him alone. He wanted to navigate the cool, turquoise waters on his own. And I let him.

Yes, he can swim. Yes, he knew the crowd. But, he has never told me to leave him with words before.

He was a bit loud. He heralded each guest (that he knew) as they arrived. He watched to see if I was peeking from the door now and then, but it was on his terms. In his way.

I let him go. Is this how we inch them out, bit by bit?

It's his call.

I think I will be inching him out more in the days ahead. These are some of the hardest things that I will ever do. Yet, I want to follow his lead.

I may blog or share this, but...you inspired me.

Thank you, Kate.
