Your Story is the Answer to Someone's Problem
And you are inspiring someone who is struggling.
Hi there,
In every single interview or presentation that I give, I am asked…why do you share your story?
It’s a legit question. Because everyone of us knows that sharing makes us feel vulnerable and exposed. And anyone who spends a second on social media knows that sharing opens a person up to scrutiny.
If you’ve read my book Forever Boy, you know there is a whole entire chapter about online bullying. Some of it so bad that I quit sharing for a long time. And when I did come back, I stopped using the word ‘autism’ because I was scared of being attacked if I said I was struggling.
But, even with all that, I still share. And it’s not for attention or fame or glory, it’s because I know that my story is the answer to someone’s problems.
My story, our life, our journey, is another person’s story, life and journey. And finding one person who understands makes all the difference.
Here is how I know it’s true…
I was at an event a while back that I was hosting, and a mama got up to share her story. She spoke of having two children with significant disabilities. She spoke of the struggles they were facing. She spoke of her own mental health crisis.
And said that a while back she found herself sitting on the floor, after too much to drink, and contemplated giving up. She couldn’t go on anymore.
When, her phone dinged.
It was a text message from a local police officer. The message said…’I just met a mom in the community whose child was just diagnosed with autism, and I could tell she was really struggling. You are the strongest mom I know, and I would love to connect you two so you can help her.’
At this point, as the woman read the text message aloud, she broke down crying. She went onto say that she didn’t see herself as strong. She saw herself as a failure.
The text message came at the most perfect time. Just the motivation she needed to keep going.
Her story was the answer to someone’s problem.
And so is yours.
Just by getting up every day, and surviving, you are helping someone out because you are showing them that the mountain can be climbed. You never know who you are inspiring.
Keep going. Keep fighting. Keep pushing forward.
Because you are changing the world just by being in it.
Thank you for being here.
Kate
